MEMBER OF THE MONTH CLAYTON KOCH

Who are you?

My name is Clayton Koch and I’ve lived in Geelong for the best parts of 23 years. Originally from Adelaide, we moved to a place in Timboon in South West Victoria for 5 years before heading to Geelong in 1995. Since finishing School I’ve pretty much been operating earthmoving machinery ever since, spending a few years over in the mines with 2 years working underground at Olympic Dam, South Australia and 1 year over in the Pilbara in Western Australia. I guess I just enjoy operating big toys and blowing stuff up!

Why CrossFit?

About 6 months ago I concluded (eventually if you ask my brother) that I needed to change the lifestyle I was living. Why I chose Crossfit is because my brother Brad used to do it at this very box and kept on nagging me to try it for the last 2-3 years. Guess he eventually got me to do it Also, my friends Matt and Carly workout here as well so that helps.

I was sceptical at first about it but now that I’ve done it for a while I really enjoy it. A couple of the things that I like about it is the variation of the workout every day so it never gets stale. Also, the classes as it motivates me to complete the workouts which I probably wouldn’t have done on my own. I started off with 2 sessions a week but after a couple of months I started doing 4 a week and haven’t looked back.

What is your favourite WOD?

I can’t really pinpoint which one I like. I tend to enjoy ones that have a little bit of everything in them

Who or What inspires you?

The people I train with and the trainers. They keep me going in the workouts and get me to go harder than I would have initially. Plus, everyone is friendly and it’s a good vibe when we’re working out, something I don’t think would happen in a conventional gym for me.

Advice for newcomers?

The biggest advice I can give is to know your limits and scale appropriately. No good going too heavy and being sore for a week or injuring yourself. If ever in doubt always ask the trainers they are more than glad to help and know what they’re talking about. Also try not to compare where your level of fitness is at compared to everyone else in the class. We’re all at different levels and stages in our lives so you can’t really compare side by side.
